XMPP Service

FOSS Galaxy provides federated instant message services using the XMPP protocol.

Connecting to The Service

Connecting is easy, simply download a client and enter your login details

Clients

There are many XMPP clients out there - any XMPP client should work with our server, here are some recommended clients to try out:

Gaijm (Linux)

Conversations (Android)

Dino (Linux)

Converse (Web)

Accounts

Accounts are of the format username@domain, for our accounts that means your account would be username@fossgalaxy.com. The client should detect the correct settings for connecting to the server.

Prosody (the server) is integrated with our IPA service - your password is the same one you use for logins.

Capabilties

Our server should support most of the features (XEPs) provided by the above clients - if there is a feature missing that you would like us to enable, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Federation

You can talk to people on other XMPP servers by adding them to your contacts. Our server is configured for federation with any XMPP server that supports SSL (the server will not federate with servers that do not encrypt their connections).

Group Chat

Group chat will be enabled in the future, but is currently not available. You can, of course, join chats hosted on other servers
